The Grand Valley football team broke a three-game losing streak on Friday night. And what better time to do it than on Homecoming Weekend?
Seven different Mustangs found their way into the end zone in a myriad of ways, leading the team to a 48-0 win over the visiting Cardinal Huskies. The win improves Grand Valley's record to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast Athletic Conference.
"It feels great," Coach Matt Rosati said. "The boys played well and did a nice job. It was a great night with a big homecoming crowd. It was a lot of fun."
Lukah Mramor got the Mustangs on the board early with a three-yard run. The freshman back has seen his workload grow in recent weeks. Said Rosati, "He's a very physical and strong player - a great kid to coach."
GV's lead grew when junior Forest Portman tackled a Cardinal player in the end zone for a safety. Portman also had a touchdown run later in the game, giving him points on both sides of the ball.
"Forest has started all year for us on defense," Rosati said. "It's only his second year of playing. He's a really good wrestler, too. He's getting better and better every week."
Next, senior JayAnthony Williams scored on a 53-yard run. Williams had missed the previous two games, so Rosati said it was good to see him back on both sides of the ball for the Mustangs.
"Jay is just so electric," Rosati said. "Him being back just opens up the whole playbook. We definitely missed him."
GV continued the onslaught when senior Mason Kocab caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Carter Turk. Rosati praised Kocab for being a Swiss Army Knife kind of guy for the Mustangs this year.
"With everything we've asked him to do, he hasn't batted an eye," Rosati said, "and we've asked him to do a lot offensively, defensively and on special teams. We played him at quarterback a little bit in the summer, wide receiver defense - bounced him around quite a bit - and he never ever batted an eye about it. He is a great program kid."
Sophomore Jeremiah Corll got into the act next, sacking a Cardinal player for another safety. His play was part of a dominating defensive effort that limited the Huskies to negative-14 yards of total offense.
"Jeremiah... what an impressive player," Rosati marveled.
After Portman scored his touchdown, Jayden Buck scored on a 15-yard run and Adam Hylton kicked a field goal to round out the Grand Valley scoring. Said Rosati of Hylton's addition to the team, "We needed a kicker, he came out in the second week of the season and has done a tremendous job."
When the game ended, the players rushed outside the stadium to ring the victory bell. The previous three wins this season were all on the road, so this was the first time the players got to ring the bell after a home win - in this case a Homecoming win.
"There were a lot of people there to see us ring the bell," Rosati said. "That was pretty neat."
Grand Valley will look to get back above .500 when it hosts Vienna Mathews this coming Friday. Mathews is 3-5 this season. Then comes the heated rivalry game in Week 10 on the road against Pymatuning Valley.
